Why is Natural and Organic Skin Care Better?

Why choose natural and organic skin care? Well, there are a host of reasons why “going natural and organic” is better than using skin care created with chemically-based products – and we would like to let you in on them.

More and more people are becoming aware of not just what they put into their bodies with the foods they eat, they are also becoming aware that what they put onto to their skin can be just as important.  Skin products containing harmful chemicals are not only damaging to skin, they can also have incredibly harmful effects on the body. And those who use natural and organic products can attest to this: The beautiful results are there to be had!

What’s Here:  In this article you will find a number of facts that can enlighten you on “cheaper” products that contain synthetic chemical ingredients, as well as help dispel the myth that they are more effective than all natural and organic skin care.

What Do “Natural” and “Organic” Mean?

“Natural” and “Organic” – What They Mean When It Comes to Cosmetics and Skin Care…

Before we really dive in and give you the reasons why natural and organic skin care is better for your skin and body, let’s get down to the nitty gritty and get the real definitions for the words “natural” and “organic.” (In fact, once you understand these terms in how they apply to products and skin care, your question might be answered right off the bat!)

A question that is asked rather often is this: “Are the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ the same?” No they are not. Read on…

What “Natural” Means

A simple and very understandable definition of “natural” comes from the Cambridge Dictionary: “from nature; not artificial or involving anything made or caused by people…”

That sounds pretty good! But – let’s take a look at what it means when it comes to skin care (and other cosmetic) products dubbed as being “natural”:

Believe it or not, the FDA does not regulate this term at all, or enforce any standards to companies that use it. While the FDA does state that a product may not legally misrepresent itself as being “natural” or anything else, it is still quite a loosely defined term in this industry and is not monitored.

The fact of the matter is, that any product could label itself as “natural” if it contains any ingredients that are produced by nature. In other words, a product could still use the term even if it contains a majority of synthetic chemical ingredients. Thus, the term “natural” can be abused, and often is. Sad but true.

Tip: When you truly want to purchase a natural product, search for a label or brand that states it is “100% natural” or “all natural.” It is likely that only then that you will actually receive a product that is natural.

PS:  It’s always a good idea to read the ingredients label to make sure!

What “Organic” Means

The term “organic” is not as loosely defined as “natural,” and in fact when a product is organic, it is much more natural than many “natural” products.

This definition from The Cambridge Dictionary defines “organic” (in terms of the growth of plants and animals) as “not using artificial chemicals in the growing of plants and animals for food and other products…”

In short, “organic” means that the natural ingredients that are contained in a product are raised without artificial means of genetically modified organisms, and without the use of herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, etc.

Bottom line: When you purchase a product that states it is both “all natural” and “organic” (such as our creams), you can feel safe in knowing that you are purchasing a product that truly comes from nature.

Natural and Organic vs. Synthetic Skin Care

Just as when we take food into our bodies, when we apply something to our skin, we are “feeding” it. The skin absorbs whatever it comes into contact with, affecting not only our skin, but our general health.

A human body knows how to process natural and organic ingredients that are put into (and onto) it. On the other hand, when we eat food (or use cosmetics) that contain unnatural and often toxic ingredients the body can become “confused” and does something with them that may put it at risk health-wise for the short or long-term.

Truly natural and organic skin care actually can be considered to work better because the body is instantly familiar with the ingredients, and “knows what to do with them,” thus they are used more efficiently and effectively.  Both skin and body stay healthier in the long-term when it is given food or cosmetic products that are natural and organic.

When a cosmetic product is not natural (chemically/synthetically made), it often contains ingredients such as pesticides and animal by-products, which are toxic.

Below is a table with some commonly-found ingredients in cosmetic products.

Some Toxic Ingredients Commonly Found in Skin Care and Other Cosmetics

The list goes on…

The FDA has a regulation that any food or cosmetic product must contain “safe ingredients” – but I must ask this:  What definition of “safe” are they using?

As a note, some “natural” products can also contain some of these ingredients.

This is why it is so important to read labels for foods, as well as for cosmetic products!

A good rule of thumb to use is this: If you have any trouble pronouncing an ingredient, and/or don’t understand what it is (unless you have a background in chemistry), chances are it is probably something that you wouldn’t want to put into (or onto) your body.

Tip:  Use the EWG Cosmetics Database to determine whether any ingredient in your skin care (or other health and beauty products) is safe.

Does Natural and Organic Skin Care Work?

Our strong answer is “YES!” Not only do many natural and organic skin products work, they actually can be more effective than their chemical-riddled counterparts.

There is some sort of odd myth in the world of cosmetics that natural and organic skin care is less effective, but that is simply not true. In fact, many vitamins and herbs as ingredients in a skin care product can give pretty fast results. For example, our creams contain Vitamin C, a well-known and powerful antioxidant, which is wonderful when applied to the skin!

While it is true that many chemical-based cosmetic products seem to give “fast results,” they are only results that are “on the surface” and seen for a short period of time. It’s what we don’t see that is dangerous. Not only is someone risking their body’s health when using these types of products, but they can also be far more damaging to the skin in the long run, causing skin to lose it’s health and youthful elasticity.

If you are currently using artificial chemical-based products and are thinking of changing to natural and organic skin care, we strongly advise you to go ahead and give it a shot – try them and see for yourself!
